This doesn’t come with any more frills though i’m afraid.  There is no 1 hour free surfing here, and there is no daily top up for £2 like you get with T-Mobile (which is what makes it top of the heap at the moment).  But i rather like the idea of the simplicity of this deal and the fact that it’s a lot faster too.  You get broadband speeds here for a reasonable price and no hassle.  Top ups are easy and you simply plug in and surf.

So you get a shorter contract with the second deal and what looks like a cheaper laptop.  Now i’m no expert on laptop PCs but i do know that generally when something is cheaper it’s not usually as good.  If this is the case then i can’t understand why 3 Mobile are charing more for this second deal; unless of course having a shorter contract is really worth that much money in the long run!

Vodafone is always a firm favourite when it comes to the dongle deals online, and they are the first on my list for today.  This deal is pretty much top of the heap at the moment.  Vodafone remain the UK’s best rated mobile broadband provider, so this dongle deal should really do it for you:

• Standard 3Gb downloads
• 12 month contract.
• £15 a month.

So what makes this such a good deal?  Well that’s a pretty good question really considering that it appears at the top of most comparison websites.  Lets look at the next best on those sites and see how it compares.  This one is from 3 Mobile:

•  Standard 7.2Mb of speed.
• Not so standard 5Gb dowloads
• A longer 18 month contract
• £15 a month

In our opinion, if you’re a gamer or someone who downloads a lot then this second deal is much better, and to be honest it’s better anyway because you get exactly what Vodafone offer and more, for just an extra 5 months on your contract.  Worth it?  You decide.

Their second great dongle deal with a free laptop is as follows:

• This is exactly the same as the last laptop deal i wrote about, and the laptop is still the Dell Mini 1012, complete with windows 7 and all the trimmings (you can see all the spec on this laptop in the previous blog post)
• What’s different is the price.  This deal is £25 a month.
• Contract Length of 24 months
• Speeds of 7.2Mb
• Free internet dongle with your purchase
• This is where the difference comes in with this free laptop deal.  With this one your usage allowance goes up to 5GB a month rather than 1GB with the first dongle deal.

It remains with the individual customer whether or not they need that extra 4 GB of usage allowance, and if they do then i suppose that the extra money is worth it.  Although i would be rather inclined to find out just how much usage i did use each month before i signed up for this deal; some providers can penalise you quite severely for exceeding your allowance.

Deal number one from 3 Mobile:

• Free Dongle
• Monthly charge of £17.50
• Usage limit of 1GB a month
• Speeds of up to 7.2 Mb
• Contract length of 24 months (or two years whichever seems less to you!)
• Free laptop – Dell Mini 1012 – with this order.  Getting the free laptop will put you online.  Read the following for information about the laptop with this dongle deal
• Windows 7 featured
• Integrated Intel 950 Graphics Media accelerator
• Up to 8 hours of battery life with this Dell.  Most Dell laptops are pretty good with this and when you’re getting a laptop it’s always good to check the battery life.
• 10 inch HD display screen
• 1GB memory.  This means basically how fast your machine will operate and execute commands.  This is a pretty average size and perfecly reasonable for this size laptop
• 160GB Hard Drive.  This is the amount of information your laptop can hold (storage if you like).
• Intel Atom N450 Processor 91.66Ghz)

So all in all this laptop is pretty good for the price and the length of contract.  I’d say that it’s a good all rounder.  It’s not great for a load of online gaming and stuff like that, but it’s perfect for study and work purposes, web browsing and writing etc.

Deal Number two in a couple of days!

First let’s look at 3 Mobile and see what they have to offer the average student, who presumably already has a laptop computer:

• The Dongle is free with this wireless internet deal
• Monthly price of £7.50 after this though.  When they put a price like this on a dongle deal aimed at students, personally i think they are insulting the average student’s intelligence.  A free dongle doesn’t cut it when you can buy one from Vodafone for £19.99 and only pay £3.00 a month after your initial dongle purchase.  This initial payout is soon recuperated by the monthly costs.
• 1 GB of usage allowance.  This isn’t too bad, and it beats the hell out of Orange’s 500Mb offer at the moment.  However, they still don’t beat Vodafone’s 3GB allowance.
• 7.2Mb speed
• 24 month contract.  This is an unlikley thing for buyers of student dongles.

Now it’s the turn of O2

• Free dongle with O2.  Just the same as 3 Mobile here.
• Monthly cost of £10.00 with this dongle deal.  This isn’t too bad compared with 3 Mobile because O2 offer the first 3 months free.  However, £10 a month after that will soon make up the difference between the two providers won’t it?
• Usage of 1GB a month.  Same as 3 Mobile here.
• 7.2Mb speed
• 18 month contract.

Well there you have it.  Both these dongles compare pretty much the same, but they will not beat Vodafone at the moment for the student market.  I think that the contract length will put many people off.  Just the word contract is enough to put me off!

3 Mobile do their best for the average customer too, but they have recognised that there is a huge gap in the market for heavy dongle users out there.  Where Vodafone lack the download allowance, offering a modest 3 Gb, 3 Mobile have bettered this by offering a massive 5 GB of downloads!

They offer exaclty the same speeds as Vodafone at 7.2 mbs and this seems to be satisfactory, but that extra download allowance is bound to get the youngsters signing up and anyone who is into downloading movies etc.  Now whether or not it will be worth 3 Mobile offering this allowance to the regular customer is yet to be seen, and we think that they may well lose some to Vodafone simply because people don’t like to buy what they don’t need.  But then 3 Mobile are not aren’t asking you for any more money!  Still £15 for a greater download allowance?  How can this be?  Well it’s all down to the length of the contract sadly, and this is something you need to watch out for.  3 Mobile have decided to put this dongle deal on an 18 month contract, which we’re sure will put people off!  Watch this space.

Some of these pay as you go dongles from these reputable internet service providers are quite different, and not all of them offer exactly the same service.  It’s worth checking very carefully exactly what you’re going to get from your dongle and what you actually need.  Some pay as you go dongles expire after a certain amount of time, and this time varies with each internet dongle provider.  For example 3 mobile will only offer your internet dongle connection for up 30 days.

However, there are some providers that don’t give you a time limit, so you are this enabled to have your dongle and not use it if you don’t want to.  There must be nothing worse than having paid for your internet dongle to be in use and never having the time to use it.  Vodafone is one such internet dongle provider that doesn’t stipulate a limit in time.  This is perfect for a light interent user who may or may not want to go online everyday.
